Stem Cell Research

By Marilyn C. Brewer

Candidate for United States Representative; District 48

This information is provided by the candidate
Only Candidate to Support | Increased Federal Funding
As former first lady Nancy Reagan and many other concerned leaders believe, embryonic stem cell research has the potential to better understand and cure disabling diseases that affect more than 100 million Americans.

Illnesses that will benefit include: Cancer, Heart Disease, Diabetes Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injury Alzheimer's (which crippled President Reagan, and many others.

However, the funds for researching these stem cells and finding the cures must come from government.

  • In the President's original authorization, there were 78 embryonic stem cell lines authorized for research, to date only 19 are available and funded by the government.
  • With this limitation, researchers are not motivated to invest resources to make important discoveries
  • The United States led the way in embryonic stem cell research; much of the research is now shifting to other countries who are now leading the research. The U.S. must not relinquish this position. Importantly for our district, U.C. Irvine is a dedicated stem cell research lab.
