2001 Elections

This newsletter was emailed to our Smart Voter News distribution list on November 2, 2001:

A Smart Resource for County Voters

Voters are wading through lists of candidates and ballot issues to prepare for the November 6 elections. The League of Women Voters of California has created SmartVoter.org to offer voters objective background on the complex issues that appear on this election's ballots.

"It can be hard for voters to find objective information," said Trudell Een, Project Director for Smart Voter. "We feel it's vital for voters to have easy access to both sides of any issue, so they can make an informed decision in the voting booth, a decision they will feel confident about."

Voters can go to http://www.smartvoter.org to read nonpartisan information about the elections in their communities, including school and municipal measures, as well as the candidates who are running for elected positions. Voters can input their address to find their polling place and receive a personalized ballot.

A new Smart Voter function added in Sacramento County is a photograph of polling locations. To see this optional feature, go to http://www.smartvoter.org/2001/10/23/ca/sac and click on the bright red "Ballot Example" button.

Smart Voter continues to expand. Voters in Monterey, Riverside, and Merced counties will find local information for the November 6 elections. Continuing California counties that have local election information on Smart Voter include Alameda, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Fresno, Humboldt, Kern, Los Angeles, Marin, Orange, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Sonoma, Stanislaus, and Ventura. Ohio has information for Hamilton County which includes the City of Cincinnati.

Smartvoter.org provides a means for all candidates in participating counties to publish information about themselves and their candidacy directly to voters and without cost. Smart Voter archives feature thousands of candidate profiles and hundreds of ballot issues from as far back as 1997.
