Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Peter B. Harckham

Candidate for
Legislator; Westchester County; Legislative District 2

Like anything else, a successful campaign begins with a vision. Few places in America are as beautiful and rich with history as northern Westchester. And few places have the quality of education choices we do. That's why we have chosen to raise our families here. No effort should be spared to protect our environment, heritage and educational system.

Unfortunately, too many of our elected officials have spent so much time focused on where we've come from that we've lost sight of where we need to go.

Our fragile drinking water supplies are being contaminated from antiquated waste-management systems; our beautiful rural character is being lost to sprawl; our roads are clogged with traffic; and our children lack appropriate athletic and library facilities to empower them to compete in a rapidly changing world. Without action our communities will cease to be desirable places to live and our small businesses will no longer be able to compete.

If my campaign is about one issue, it will be about building consensus for a roadmap to the future. Our vision should respect each individual community's character and independence; our vision will cherish our history and rural beauty; yet our vision must also recognize our economic interconnectedness with other branches of government and the need to invest in our future. This vision will strengthen northern Westchester to retain its bucolic beauty, remain second to none as a place for us to raise our children, support a vibrant small-business community, and allow our seniors to remain in the area they love.

I am running for the County Legislature to rebuild the partnership between our towns and the county government, so together we will have the resources we need to chart a course for a brighter future, while offsetting the cost to already overburdened property taxpayers.
