Text of Candidate's Statement as it appears in Voters' Election Guide.When I ran for school board in 2003, the Redondo Beach school district was bleeding red ink at about $1.5M per year. Teacher layoffs were being planned and employees, parents, and students were picketing. Within six months of my election, I personally identified $600,000 of bureaucratic waste and involved our whole community in balancing the budget without teacher layoffs and without impacting the classrooms. Today, the District is experiencing nearly $1M of surplus per year and is rebuilding its "rainy day" reserves. Our employees are focusing on educating students and creating significant improvements in test scores. District-wide API scores have risen 35 points. Giving students the best education possible requires going beyond what we've done before. In 2006, as Board President, I initiated an alliance spanning six local school districts. My first program brought State Superintendent Jack O'Connell and State Assemblyman Ted Lieu together with local school board presidents, teacher association presidents and district superintendents for a round table discussion on funding technology programs and special education.
