Questions & Answers

1. What is your position regarding the extension of Measure M? Please explain your position.

Measure 'M' promised mass rapid transit (light rail or other rail systems) upon approval. To date, this has NOT occurred. Neither has the promise to synchronize our traffic signals been fulfilled. Travel along Street of the Golden Lantern/Moulton Parkway/Irvine Center Drive (one and the same street, depending upon the city in which you're stuck in traffic) illustrates how woefully inadequate or virtually non-existent synchronization has been, particularly during rush-hour commuting.

Measure 'M', instead of solving Orange County's traffic and transportation problems, particularly with an eye on the future, has instead utilized a band-aid approach. Unless and until Measure 'M' delivers on its promises, I will not support it.

2. What is your position on the expansion of toll roads in Orange County? Please explain your position.

Toll roads do NOTHING WHATSOEVER to alleviate traffic congestion. What toll roads do is facilitate more development, thus further contributing to the worsening problem of what has become known as urban sprawl. Further, toll roads are a form of DOUBLE TAXATION! We pay at the gas pump considerable taxes, supposedly for building roads and highways, and then we are forced to pay AGAIN in order to use the toll roads for which we have already paid!

I have pledged that, if elected, I will join California Attorney General Bill Lockyer's lawsuit against the Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA) for that body's approval of the Foothill-South Toll Road extension, which is in clear violation of the Endangered Species Act and the Coastal Act.

3. What do you think the supervisors should do to resolve the issue of the county's underfunded pension liabilities and retirement health benefits?

First of all, what has already been promised (in writing) must be fulfilled. Secondly, there should be a moritorium on any new benefits. Thirdly, the "golden parachute" for department heads MUST be terminated. Finally, salary increases and hidden perks for county elected officials need to be eliminated IMMEDIATELY.
