Meeting the Educational Challenges of the 21st Century

We Have Hgh Expectations for Our Students
We are equipping more students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. Graduating seniors in the Long Beach Unified School District this year earned more than $20 million in academic scholarships + the largest amount in a decade. The Class of 2005 amassed $20,701,956 in scholarships and monetary awards to reduce their college costs this fall.

In addition, students took more than 4,800 advanced placement (AP) exams + an increase of 1,300 over the previous year. This fall, students will fill about 6,000 seats in rigorous AP courses to earn college credit while they are still in high school. This represents an increase of more than 3,000 during the past two years. I know of no school system in the nation with a greater increase.

Special summer workshops were held this year to prepare more students to meet this difficult academic challenge. We identified hundreds of students with potential after giving all students the PSAT test free of charge. Students who never before considered themselves college material are now enrolling in AP courses.

We have high expectations for students long before they enter high school. We believe that all students can learn, and we do everything possible to make certain they do. That is why we have experienced steadily increasing test scores with more schools meeting or exceeding their academic growth targets than ever before. Our schools and our children are on the way up.
