School Safety

By James "Jim" Choura

Candidate for Member, Board of Education; Long Beach Unified School District; District 5

This information is provided by the candidate
School Safety is Better and Continues to Improve
Safe schools for every child in the Long Beach Unified School District require extra efforts. Behind the scenes, our school staff, school district security and superintendent's office work closely with law enforcement to make certain our schools continue to be islands of safety + no matter what happens elsewhere. During my first term in office we have increased school security, added staff and patrol cars, improved working relationships with the Lakewood Sheriff's Station, Long Beach Police Department, Signal Hill Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff on Catalina Island.

In case of an emergency, response time has never been better. We also stress to students the importance of keeping school campuses safe, free of weapons and illegal substances. Operation Short Stop intervenes in court with first time offenders to help prevent repeat offenses. Every year we also notify all students and parents that real weapons, drugs or violence are not tolerated on our campuses. As a result, we have a good record of school safety and we work very hard to keep it that way.
